.ISM @ The Lab

Where it’s at…..Bet you never noticed a recycling bin sitting in the parking lot of The LAB, or if you did you think, “Oh cool a place to go recycle my Sprite can.” Guess again folks, that bin is actually an art gallery, The Artery to be exact. The LAB continuously exhibits art in The Artery and .ISM Quarterly has been given the opportunity to showcase their latest project “Little Squares.”

Little squares project...

Every first Wednesday of the month, you will find .ISM at the LAB, an event that gives people a chance to listen to some great poetry, cool tunes from local bands, and observe an array of art. .ISM at the LAB is basically a “forum where everyone can interact” mentions Josh Levenshus, Sales & Marketing Director for .ISM Quarterly. .ISM is a quarterly magazine that displays the art, poetry, music/video, from a diverse group of artists. These artists submit their pieces to the magazine for an opportunity to have their artwork showcased. “Other publications limit themselves, but at .ISM you can find artwork from an established middle-aged artist on one page and find art from a seventeen year old on the next page” showing that it does not discriminate (Levenshus).

“Little Squares”, currently on display in The Artery every first Wednesday of the month, are numerous 6” by 6” squares that have been distributed around the world. Each square shows artwork from various artists, and each square represents "one life, one moment, on piece of the puzzle." Other previous projects that were created:

  • “A Novel Idea” - a continuing story with the opportunity for unopened endings finished by multiple artists
  • “Iris” - where disposable cameras were sent to people and the viewer envisions the world through the eyes of the photographer.

Josh explains, “These projects are a life extension of the magazine and projects like these allow .ISM to showcase art from not just ten people but eventually thousands or more.”

.ISM is a unique periodical that truly takes the meaning of art and transposes it across the pages for readers to see. Projects that .ISM created to support the main goals of their magazine have a very humanistic approach, dealing with matters of human emotions, senses, and values that aren't always seen through life's everyday actions. Hands on experiences like these give artists opportunities to express these issues. And .ISM at the LAB, a monthly event that encourages the community to gather and soak in some culture and entertainment.
